Why I started Healthy At Home
After working in a variety of health care settings, including subacute rehab and home health, for nearly 20 years, it became clear that there is a lack of support for seniors in Vermont who want to stay in their homes and continue living the way they envisioned. As a PT, I work with seniors to build up their strength and mobility after an illness or injury and help restore their prior level of function. Visits and duration of care for PT are permitted and managed by insurance, so often there are continued goals to work towards and achieve, but insurance requires us to discontinue instead.
As a result, there is often a decline in function and mobility shortly after PT services end. It is disheartening for seniors at any age to have to make major life-altering living arrangements and give up so much of their independence, goals, and quality of life. Over the last several years, I’ve contemplated how I could better support aging Vermonters more consistently and long-term so they can remain in their homes and maintain their goals of independence while staying safe

20+ Years of Knowing What to Look For
Katie is a licensed physical therapist with over 20 years of experience. She received her Bachelor of Science and her Master’s of Physical Therapy from Quinnipiac University. She spent the early part of her career working in acute care and outpatient settings before transitioning to subacute rehab for 9 years and, finally, to home health for 8 years. That variety of experience has allowed her to focus her clinical expertise on supporting seniors from every angle. Most recently, Katie obtained the Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) credential from the National Association of Home Builders to further her expertise.
When Katie is not focused on her passion to support seniors, you can find her with her family and friends in the hills of Huntington. She enjoys running, skiing, and anything that gets her outside.
Wellness isn’t what happens after a crisis. It’s what prevents one.
The best way to maximize your health and independence is to take proactive steps to prevent illness or hospitalization. I’ll start by building on your goals and circumstances, creating a program that supports safety, independence, and strategies to prevent a crisis down the road.
You deserve the same person every time.
Unlike agencies that send whoever’s available, I’m the person that shows up. The benefits of working one-on-one consistently can’t be overstated. Knowing the big and small details allows me to support you most effectively. Building a relationship helps my clients thrive when they know they have someone to help them meet their goals.
Staying home should be a realistic option, not a wish.
Most seniors want to age at home. Unfortunately, wanting to be in your home and being able to do it safely are two different things. With my support, I’ll help close the gap. If staying home is viable, I’ll help make it work; if it’s not, I’ll tell you that, too.
Frequently Asked Questions
The first visit is low-key with the focus on gathering information about the person and their home environment. A full home safety assessment is performed to determine what’s working, what’s risky, and which small changes could make a big difference.
Providing education on the benefits of wellness as a preventive approach to help clients stay at home can sway even the most stubborn Vermonter. A proactive approach to health will result in fewer hurdles down the road and overall improved quality of life. Proactive versus reactive is the name of the game.
One of our goals is to view the client and the home as a single unit. In addition to a thorough home safety assessment, we perform a physical assessment to evaluate strength, balance, mobility, medical history, and, most importantly, the individual goals of each person she works with.
Depending on the client and family’s preference, and the wellness package selected, we will send a written summary. Details on how things are going from a physical and medical standpoint, what’s changed, and what to watch for. For out-of-state children and families, that email is often the first honest, professional update they’ve ever received.
A CAPS credentialed practitioner is trained to evaluate homes and recommend modifications that help people age safely at home. The credential, issued by the National Association of Home Builders, combines knowledge of how bodies change with practical expertise in how homes can adapt. Katie pairs this with 20+ years of experience in physical therapy.
